Strategies for Building Successful Relationships with People on the Autism Spectrum: Let's Relate! Brian R. King Jessica Kingsley Publishers: Philadelphia, PA, 2012

Autism Spectrum Lets Relate

This is a raw, honest, insider-view of lessons learned growing up under the influence of autism. Brian is very open about his struggles and successes and how to improve relationships through open-mindedness and stepping out to relate. He talks about his struggles in college with a dean who didn't "get" asperger's syndrome, giving nonspecific and unhelpful advice that amounted to no help and even more confusion. He explains how to give feedback and communicate effectively with the ones we work with, live with, love and support. I have always respected Brian's work but am even more so understanding his depth on the subject after reading this book. Instead of talking about features and characteristics alone, he encourages the reader to get into the mind of the spectrumite and gives specific examples on how accomplish this task. This is a must-have for anyone looking to improve their relationship with someone on the spectrum.
